Rural Tourism - Rappel

You do not have to be a navy seal or work for the NYPD to enjoy the sport of rappelling. This is an adventure that was mostly used for rescue activities by law enforcement and the military. It is now a recreational activity and a complete industry of its own bringing millions of dollars to the tourism industry and a chance to see a part of the rainforest that was never before possible.

Along with rafting and ziplining the rappel is right up there with adrenaline pumping activities you can find in Costa Rica.

When dealing with rappelling many times in Costa Rica you can hear it referred to as canyoneering. Canyoneering is the sport of making your way down a canyon on your hands, feet, and knees and when necessary you do a rappel down a waterfall.

You want to make sure you do this adventure with the proper outfitter. There are companies that work in the business and then there are others who just have the equipment. The two most common outfitters for canyoneering are Pure Trek and Desafio.

Our company operates mostly rappels and when dealing with canyoneering we contract out to a different outfitter. A rappel for example would be almost driving your car to the point of where you are going to go off the ledge with your rope and equipment. This is a sport that being with a trained professional is very important. Costa Rica is a great place to practice this sport and allows you to bring water into the equation of rappelling off waterfalls and hiking down a canyon that has a small creek in it. There are waterfalls all over Costa Rica.

Some of the highest and most intense rappels are Toro Amarillo and Diamante Falls in Dominical. Only the Toro Amariillo is a commercial rappel the Diamante you will need to know somebody who has the gear and is willing to take you down what is a 600ft rappel.
