Rural Tourism - La Fortuna Falls

When it comes to waterfalls this is a hard one to beat. La Fortuna falls in our opinion is a must- see when visiting the Arenal area. It is a short drive from the center of town and then 600 steps down to the bottom. It is a 150ft free fall down to the bottom. The free fall is filled with a heavy stream of water making for one of the most powerful sounds echoing in the beautiful canyon surrounded by jungle. It truly makes for a majestic feeling when visiting.

When you first arrive you can’t help but just stare at the waterfall for a few minutes. After you get a few hundred pictures of the waterfall you can make your way to the pools which are just another 50 yards down the path and a few more stairs. In the pools you can enjoy refreshing water and a chance to just relax. From the pools you still hear the roar of the waterfall and have a great view from the distance broken up a bit by the jungle making it look like something out of a Jurassic Park movie.

After your time in the pools you can make your way back up to the top. If you are with a guide there are a number of different species of plants that will be pointed out on the way up. This also helps with breaking up the hike which as you can imagine 600 steps is not a walk in the park. When you arrive at the top there is a very nice souvenir shop which for some reason always has a great selection of Costa Rican books. So if you are interested in some Costa Rican literature this might be the place to check out.

After your time in the bookstore there are some very clean bathrooms where you can get dried off and even take a shower if needed.

La Fortuna falls is not privately owned and all entrance fees which are $10’s go towards the town of La Fortuna. There have been a number of different things accomplished with the funds raised such as the new central park and even a new fire station and much more. So next time you are in the Arenal area and you want to see one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful waterfalls you can feel good that your $10’s is going to a good cause.

Testimonials

"Loved giving back to the local communities. It was amazing to walk into the rural areas and feel so welcomed. The zipline and rafting are amazing but bringing us to hang with the locals tops it all. "
